A Rant Relative to Sydney Botulinum Injections
Sydney Botulinum medicine (B.tox for short) is now established amongst stylish Sydney society and has become an integral part of grooming for individuals in the Harbour City.
Nonetheless I never fail to be startled by the rumours surrounding the simple procedure. Here I have included some of the common stories which I hear everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a doctor.
Urban Legend Number 1: The muscles in my forehead may stiffen up!
The human face has around sixty muscles. They ordinarily work in harmony, however from continual movement lines or wrinkles may form. If surplus B.tox has been injected the facial expression can become too relaxed. In general doctors use comparatively minute dosages to result in you looking ‘refreshed’, yet you will still be every bit as expressive.

So the right dosage of B.tox in the proper place means facial expression is maintained whilst the lines undergo a softening effect.
Urban Legend Number 2: B.tox is a toxic substance!
This to some extent is true. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmacological terminology. An overdose can loosen facial muscles that you do not want relaxed and even may make you extremely sick.
But to maintain some perspective: a well known chemist’s saying states that ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. All drugs in a large dose will make you sick. If you drink too much water you will die.
Urban Legend Number 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
Your hair is larger than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Many people say that the injections aren’t worse than being bitten by a mosquito. Certainly not painful compared to getting a blood profile.
Urban Legend Number 4: B.tox will deaden the sensation in my face!
False. B.tox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax muscles is affected by B.tox injections.
Urban Legend Number 5. You must keep getting B.tox otherwise the lines and wrinkles become even worse!
This is also wrong.
You can expect B.tox to last for upwards of three months. Any treatments after the first one usually last a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually reform as the muscle regains its normal function. However they will certainly be no more noticeable than when you began.
In fact the wrinkles should be be softer than if you had never had B.tox – even if you never repeat the injections. This is mainly the case because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
