Profiting From Mistakes

For many years now, getting traffic from search engines when people misspell a word has been a popular technique. I’ve often read that you should include spelling errors in the meta keyword tag on your page. Unfortunately, there is a problem with this advice.

None of the search engines actually index the meta keyword tag!

So, this doesn’t work. It did work a few years back but not any more. Before I tell you what you need to do to target typos, lets look at a few example to see if it’s actually something that you should bother with.

I spent a day this week looking for signs that people do actually make mistakes when searching for stuff. Here are my findings. The numbers associated with each term are the total of searches performed on Overture last month.

eBay: ebey – 6852, rbay – 1055, dbay – 383, sbay – 248, evay – 681, enay – 516, ebqy – 318, ebzy – 202, ebsy – 1010, ebau – 2077, ebah – 99, ebaj – 36, webay – 177, rebay – 197. Amazon: anazon – 372, amaxon – 486, amazom – 2104, amazob – 38. Corey Rudl: cory rudl – 702, corey rudel – 40

These are all brand names. Let’s take a quick look at some generic terms.

Soccer: socer – 1098, socccer – 147, soocer – 619, sooccer – 47, soceer – 226,. Food: fod – 1299, ffod – 198, fodd – 74, ffood – 56, foood – 242.

It’s important to note that with some of the above, people were actually searching for the keywords that they typed in. Also, in the case of the eBay examples, the keywords that I have used may often relate to another topic such as a radio station name. Still, it’s easy enough to see that lots of people do make mistakes when they search.

There are a few things that we can learn from this. The first is that the more a keyword is searched for, the more chance there is that someone will make a mistake – this is obvious. The second is that sometimes people just don’t know how to spell what they are looking for. This is most common with names and technical terms. The third is that people often make mistakes when searching for words that have letters repeated – soCCer, fOOd. They double up the wrong letter or type it too many times. I actually find myself doing this quite often.

Now, keywords that are spelled incorrectly are extremely easy to target on the search engines. Why? Because people who run websites tend not to include information on their sites with major spelling errors. The more professional the site, the less likely it is that there will be a spelling mistake. The sites that do spell keywords wrong tend not to be too hard to beat in the rankings because if they are unprofessional enough to have spelling mistakes for important words, chances are they don’t have too many links pointing to them.

This is where it gets tricky. You don’t want to be appear unprofessional by having spelling mistakes on your site. I don’t recommend doing this just to target the search engines.

So, how do you get some of this traffic?

As I said previously, the search engines do not use the meta keyword tag so this option is out.

This article is, in itself, a big clue. When I put this article on my site, I’ll rank quite well for all of the terms that I mentioned above. I will also add some links to the article. For example, “If you are looking for eBay, Click Here”. Of course, I’ll include my affiliate link.

Therefore, you need to use a bit of creativity on your site to get the spelling mistakes seen by the search engines. One of the most popular ways of doing it is to use hidden text. This could be by making the text really small or the same colour as the background. Don’t do this. The search engines don’t like it and will ban you if they catch you doing it. It’s not worth the risk.

Another option is to write an article and then provide a list of “common misspellings” at the bottom of the article. Generally, this will be OK if you are targeting a keyword that is notoriously difficult to spell. However, there is a slim chance that the search engines would view this as keyword stuffing if they chose to manually review your site. If you do choose to do this, don’t go overboard. As I said, generally, it’ll be OK but not always.

A third option is to provide common misspellings within the text of the article. For example, I could write an article about eBay and put the following in brackets after one of the occurrences of the term eBay – “not eBey as many people think”. If you are targeting a person’s name or a technical term, it can be viewed as helpful to the person reading the article if you tell them how to spell a word correctly.

Another example could be for me to write an article about Corey Rudl. Within the article, I could point out that many people do spell his name Cory but Corey is correct.

As I said, be creative – don’t try to be tricky. You will often find that, in relation to Google, one mention of the keyword in the text of a page will be enough to get you near the top of the rankings if your PR is high enough.

There is one more step that you need to follow. I’m largely focussing on using this to get traffic for your site or as a way to get people from the search engines and forward them on to another site via an affiliate program. So, if people unknowingly make a mistake when they do a search, the title for your page must give the impression that they have found what they are looking for. If they intended to search for eBay, you must make sure that you grab them quickly with your title so that they will visit your site. So, “Review of eBay” would be a good example.

If the title of your listing does not really match what they are searching for, it may alert them to the fact that they have made a mistake.

Now, Google offers alternative spellings if they think a searcher has made a mistake. So, if you are listed at number one for the incorrectly spelt keyword, you have a chance to get them before they click on the link that Google provides to the results for the correct spelling.

The technique that I’ve mentioned here is a very simple way to target the search engines and can often be used effectively by newish sites whose PR is not high enough to target the correct version of the keyword. It’s also useful if you or your products become well known because it will make sure that people can find you even if they can’t spell the name correctly.

On Overture last month there were 92 searches for Sean Burns. There were also 91 searches for Shaun Burns and 29 for Shawn Burns. Now, I won’t pretend that all of these people were looking for me but I should make sure that the ones that are can find me, even if they spell my name incorrectly.

Who knows? They may be the ones who want to buy my eBook!

Traffic Report: Looks Crowded

Hey, there. Steve here. I have been looking for ways to create multiple stream of income. I have been working hard on it for two years and I have succeeded in getting 14 streams of outgo. But all I really need is one solid stream of income. Perhaps even a river. If you are trying to make money online, you need traffic coming to your web site. (Nothing new there, right.)

Well, here’s the “new” part. There are some things better left to the professionals. And by “professionals” I don’t just mean people who do what you could do yourself, but they do it full time. Oh no. I mean people who have created a high tech software package so intense it takes two months for it to do its thing. But once it starts to work, well, you’d better be ready for action. They can drive an unbelievable amount of traffic to your web site. Most people who do Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, couldn’t even dream of what these people do. This is not for the faint of heart. Here’s their guarantee: Because of them, you will see $100,000 more profit from your web site within four months, or your first year of service is free. So now you’re wondering how quickly you get a refund if they don’t meet their deadline. No refund. No need for one. You don’t pay for their service until after you have made money. Not pocket change either. $100,000 profit within four months or you don’t pay for their service.

So at this point either a. you want to sign up b. you would but you don’t have a web site to promote or c. you don’t understand English. There is a lot more info and testimonials and explanations etc. on their web site. You need to check this out today before your competition does. For more info send an email to traffic@cashcoming.com and I’ll reply right away. Your river of income is just waiting for you to open the dam. What are you waiting for?

Steve Orris has seen a lot of money-loosing opportunities on the Internet. After careful consideration of many opportunities just a few stand out as real winners. I look at both sides of issues and think for myself. I have been told all my life what to think and how to believe. Is it no wonder I was no better off than they? To go along with the crowd doesn’t take any brains. Here’s my advice: Learn from people who are where you want to be. Are You Content With Your Page Views? Learn the SEO Secrets of how to Turbo Boost Your Traffic!

Oh my gosh, you built a website, you took so much time and effort… but barely anyone’s visiting. WHY is that? It could be because you have yet to Turbo Boost your site for more page views and increased rank with the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and AskJeeves.com. Following are Five Tried and Tested Techniques that Really Work to Drastically Improve your SE positioning. Try them and experience the difference firsthand.

SEO Secret 1. Make Your Reader “Click Here to Read More.”

Think about this. You can guarantee at least one page view for every person who reads an article if you compel them to click a “read more” link. How to do this? Include four articles on a featured category page… but only paste the introduction to each article. Once the reader is “hooked” by an article’s opener, he will click to read the rest. Remember this next time you’re tempted to just plop a lone article on a carelessly placed page.

SEO Secret 2. Leave a Breadcrumb Trail that Leads Back Home.

No matter where you roam on the web, it should be your mission to lead customers back to your site… and that means not just the homepage, but other pages as well. So drop those breadcrumbs so that folks you meet can follow the trail back to your site. Examples: include your URL link in every blog and forum post you make. Broadcast your latest promotion to everyone you meet, and include the link to a landing page that covers the details in depth. Your sole purpose in being on the web is to track back to your site, and today’s content distribution methods make it SO EASY to do this! Try it with your articles, blogs, forum posts, reciprocal links and more.

SEO Secret 3. Optimize Your Web Article Campaigns.

If you use articles to increase your exposure on the web, take advantage of that customizable author resource (or bio) box for every unique promotional page you create. Develop campaigns around each one of those articles that all point back to a single page on your website. This should be a specially designed page that houses a strong persuasive message and prompts your reader to become a subscriber. More subscribers after all, means more folks reading your website’s content! Write five, ten, fifty or five hundred articles for each campaign. Wait two weeks and analyze your results. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you learned!

SEO Secret 4. Give Away Free Downloadable E-Books.

Surprise… I’m sharing with you the real reason why marketers give away information so freely. Yes, they want to win your favor… but they also want you to download that page. Each download counts as one page view, and this registers in your site stats which wins you major brownie points with the search engines. If you’ve ever started at your web traffic feeling mystified at the sudden surge in numbers, it’s highly likely that you forgot that Free E-Book you recently gave away… or maybe some friend of yours is now giving it away from their website!

So now that you know the real reason for all this mysterious marketer behavior on the web, isn’t it time you started using it to your advantage? Oh, but that’s a TON of work, so what will you do? Free Traffic Course – Day 9

Though each web site is different, it is possible to build a universal plan of actions that will bring you free targeted web site traffic and convert it into more sales.

This plan of actions can be split into three stages:

(1) Getting Targeted Traffic

(2) Growing The Client Base And Getting More Sales

(3) Adjusting Web Site To Current Online Market Requirements

So, let’s briefly cover all the stages.

START UP – GETTING TARGETED TRAFFIC

STEP # 1. Find joint-venture partners and affiliates in your niche.

STEP # 2. Get emails and names of your partners and affiliates-to-be.

STEP # 3. Email them your joint-venture or affiliate offer.

NOTE: These people will make a great job for you – they will bring targeted users to your web site and advertise your offers for their clients or for targeted online audience. Make sure to offer them good conditions of cooperation: the more motivated they are to work with you, the better they will work to give you targeted web site traffic or advertise your offers.

GROWING THE CLIENT BASE – GETTING MORE SALES

STEP # 4. Set up link exchange directory.

Try to exchange links with web sites that have a bigger page rank and are niche related to your web site.

STEP # 5. Use autoresponder to convert web site visitors into prospects and clients.

Do not lose any web site visitor. Drive the visitors to autoresponders, educate and motivate them to use your offers, grow your client base.

STEP # 6. Convert traffic into sales.

Use mailing list, autoresponder and URL tracking tools to raise the effectivity of your offers. Check what offers give better response, use them more, improve them – work with your clients. Let them feel your personal care about their needs.

ADJUST YOUR WEB SITE TO CURRENT ONLINE MARKET REQUIREMENTS

STEP # 7. Check what gives money and what gives losses.

Use URL tracking tools to check what strategies, ads, web page texts, online campaigns give nice results – stick to them. If you see that something gives losses – eradicate useless efforts.

STEP # 8. Make necessary changes to web site.

Once you found that any element on your web site needs changes, do the changes immediately. Use content management system for it. Save the changes and enjoy new power on your web site.

STEP # LAST. Test, test, test – this is not a new suggestion, but a very important one.

As you can see, this plan of action can be applied to any web site. The steps are not detailed, but you can see that getting free targeted web site traffic is not a myth. It is just a matter of special tips and techniques.

Linking Strategies – Build Quality Traffic to your Web Site

There are at least two approaches to reciprocal linking. Some advise you to, “use a smart linking to gradually increase traffic and get the attention of visitors interested in your site”. The other says, “Use a mass linking campaign. Don’t worry about who links to you – it tricks the search engines and gets you higher rankings”.

The more traditional approach is to build a link directory with relevant, quality sites that agree to link back. It comes with a secret bonus – it provides your site visitors a list of resources that you have spent some time checking out and think are worthwhile. This approach follows the proven path of the Yahoo founders. They built the Yahoo directory, essentially a large link directory, one link at a time. That was the best possible way to ensure quality search results in the pre-Google days. I have noticed that several search engine optimization consultants promote the second approach. They are speaking to internet newcomers who are eager to get to the top of the search engines. When you’re running a small business and you have launched a new site, branding is not your goal. You can’t afford to mass market in hopes of gradually being recognized. You realize that building a brand is a big businesses strategy. You are never going to be a household word.

Getting visitors is your main concern. The search engines appear to offer free traffic to anybody that gets listed. Your on the right track, they are important. But you can’t let your interest in traffic make you overreact, loose touch, and waste time pursuing gimmicks to beat the search engines. Unfortunately, going over to the dark side requires just as much time and money and the “tricks” often do not work. My opinion – you guessed it, I like to wear a white hat – and I know that the traditional approach produces results. Attracting search engines is a great way of generating sustained, targeted traffic. However, it will drive you crazy if you try to understand how the engines work. Spend your energy developing the content that searchers are looking for. After all, the search engines are simply trying to find the most relevant site in response to a search phrase – and guess what, that could be you.

In addition to your content, most engines pay attention to your link popularity – how many inbound links you have. Google also seems to judge the quality of your site by looking at your Page Rank and your link partner’s Page Rank. But search engines are complicated beasts and very unpredictable, especially for new sites.

You have to listen to the teachings of the “SEO experts” when building your site. They have experience in building content that works for customers as well as search engines. However, once your search engine friendly site is built, forget that the search engines exist and concentrate on you customers and their experience.

Put your energy into quality content and the rest of it into building your link partners. But remember, link directories will help you more if they add value to your site. Don’t bury them. Make them visible and useful.

For small business web sites, I think Link directories are a necessary part of eCommerce. Notice that I didn’t say nice to have; I said necessary.

You will build a better site if you spend a minute judging your link partners before making a link. Ask yourself – will my customer take an interest in what they find there? And – will this site send me traffic? Their links should be placed in a way that actually brings you an occasional customer. Likewise, your link directory should be useful to your customers so it doesn’t detract from your site.

Be Number One

The trick to making it REALLY big on the internet biz channel these days is to become an authority. It doesn’t matter what the subject is, if you are THE authority on it, you’ll be making money in no time!

Imagine it, you want to become involved in the world of selling candle wax. You’ve noticed that you and your friends all have a hard time buying candle wax online for decent prices or quality support, and you decide that you’ve had enough. You want to become the top authority in the world of candle wax selling!

Now that you’ve got your niche, you need to create an attractive and useful website. I know this is harder than I make it out to be, but I’m going to assume you can do this well enough. For these types of sites you almost have to have a message board / forum, tons of content, and fresh articles. You can get the articles from great sites such as the one you are on right now, or many others. The forums are easy to achieve via php boards, and the content is where you can put your own knowledge.

Now that you’ve got your site live, and applied basic seo principals, you’ll start to see some decent traffic. The most important part of being an authority is to become number one under a few of your keywords in a search engine (yahoo / google / msn are the biggest 3). Once you’ve achieved that, your site will be recieving very bulk amounts of hits. You’re probably thinking, duh, no kidding, with all that traffic my adsense would sky rocket! Or, my affiliate program would be huge with that!

WRONG! Don’t think small, think unrealistic! Wouldn’t you rather make unrealistic amounts of money than normal, every day ho hum chump change? Make your own product, the easiest way to do this is write your own ebook. Write a good guide, a good story, some good advice, just write something halfway good. Since YOUR the authority, people will be clamoring to buy your book. After all, your the best.

Now, if you want to take this a step further, and I know you do, then you’ll want to create a few sister sites, all more orientated toward profit. Using your authority site for page rank and advertisement, give these sister sites huge, awesome reviews, and highly recommend them. You’ll see all of said sites gain huge profits, probably over night!

10 Ways to Increase Traffic to Your Website

Ever since the time websites became new to the World Wide Web, webmasters have been trying to direct traffic to their websites. As this was no easy task, webmasters found a way; a way that cost them money. Over the years, website promotion became much easier. Now, with over four million websites on the internet, when a web user has found your website, you shouldn’t take their visit for granted. So, I have listed ten ways to increase your traffic.

1. Main problem is that most websites are “Under Construction”, so when a visitor visits that website, they will waste no time leaving. So, FIRST, you must keep your website out of too much “construction.” And, you may use an e-mail notifier to announce to your members or customers that your website construction is complete and they can come back.

2. Second, ADS; I see too many ads on one website, and because of that, i don’t want to stay there for long. The best web host yo ucan get is HostUltra. They offer unlimited disk space, ad-free, but the reason this host is the best… it’s FREE! I hosted one of my websites there and loved it.

3. If you have content on your website that can be found in other places, most likely your visitors will leave. so, it’s wise to use your own content or anyo other content that can’t be found on any other website. But if you use content from someone else, be sure to get their permission first.

4. Add-ons. If you anything like an email service or a message board or forum, that can be acessed on your website, your visitors will hafe something to come back to. With an email service, your visitors can register or login to check their mail. People like me, check their mail everyday, so this is a great idea to consider. You can get a free email service at http://www.zzn.com/. And with a message board, yor members can talk to you or each other.

5. Another great way to increase your traffic is by a Tell a Friend form or button that you can put on your website. With this, your visitors can invite their friends and their friends, on and on. So, your traffic will keep flowing if this happens. But do not force yor visitors to invite their friends, just remind them.

6. Short URLs are also importantif you want your visitors to have an easy and quick way to acess your website. One of the best is FreeDomain.co.nr; CJB.net is good too.

7. Affiliation. With affiliates, you can get alot more traffic. When you affiliate with someone, try to partner up with a popular website that has content related to yours.

8. Advertise. You can advertise your website at www.trafficexchange.com, which is a great traffic exchange program for anyone to use. When you advertise on a large website like TrafficExchange, millions of web users could find your website and keep returning to it.

9. Service or product support. If you have a service or product, your customers would like to have a place on your website that they can get support, otherwise they will find a better place. You can go to Bravenet to get a free chat service ar you can just search Google for one.

10. If you have a business where you offer products online for residents in your area, sponsoring a car, purchasing a billboard or anything else you can advertise on is a good idea.

I hope this article was helpful to you.
