Unlimited Music Download Plan Shelved by Virgin Media

The recent competition among major service providers in providing music download service has heated up. In this context, Virgin Media has already backtracked from its earlier option of unlimited music downloads that subscribers had been eagerly waiting for.

This particular service was announced by Virgin Media in June and it is to be launched this Christmas, but without the unlimited option. A spokesperson for the company recently revealed that talks are on with independent and major labels so that the comprehensive music download service can be made effective. Most probably, Virgin Media will launch the service with Universal Music as its partner. The other major labels like EMI and Sony Music have definitely been unnerved by this move.

According to latest news on the website The Register, instead of its earlier promise of unlimited music, Virgin Media Broadband is all set to launch a subscription plan of £15 a month with a cap on 40 MP3 downloads. As an add-on benefit, it will include the option of unlimited streaming of music tracks.

ISP BSkyB, not to be left behind, has quickly announced its own plan to launch a similar service called Sky Songs, although a launch date is yet to be finalised.
